Designed by architects Hannes Lintl and Robert Krapfenbauer, itwas opened on 16 April 1964 (after 20 months of construction) for theInternational Viennese Gardening Show. It weighs 17,600 tons and isconstructed of 3,740 m³ of concrete sitting on a foundation 8 metersdeep and 31 meters across. There is a jump platform as well for thethrill-seekers. There are 776 stairs to the top and every November a"Stair Run" event is held. Currently the record stands at 3 minutes and19 seconds. It attracts approximately 450,000 visitors per year and as of December 2001 had a total of 15.6 million visitors.
